Is internship right for me?

Internship is a great way to explore a career before you decide what you'll do after high school.  It's more interesting than most summer jobs high school students are qualified for (think selling shirts or flipping burgers). Internships also pay you, give you high school credit and get you experience in the field you've chosen. There's really no down side.

But if you're still not sure if internship is right for you, contact us. We can help answer any questions you might have or even help you choose the right program for you.

When can I start my program?

You can start most programs as early as Grade 10. If you want to get the most out of your program (certification/apprenticeship, more high school credit), start early. Students who begin in Grades 11 or 12 may not reach the 'end' of their program by graduation, earning less credit and possibly not completing certification requirements.

How does the application process work?

Our process works a lot like a regular job search. Once you've submitted your application to CAREERS and been approved to intern by your school off-campus coordinator, you'll need to interview for an open position. Employers pick the candidate who makes the best impression, so make sure you polish your resume and interview skills beforehand.

How much will I be paid?

Your employer will pay you either an honorarium (a set amount of money given at the end of the internship) or an hourly wage equal to or higher than minimum wage. When you get paid and how much you make varies between programs and employers.

How long are the internships?

Most internships last about 4-8 weeks. In some programs you can continue your work into the school year and balance it with your regular courses.

What will I get out of my internship?

Like many things in life, you get what you put in. Show up on time, work hard, ask plenty of questions and study hard in school. It may sound cheesy, but hard work is the key to achieving anything worthwhile, including a great career.

Even if you decide to go into a different field than your internship was in, you'll still get:

  • high school credit
  • a fair wage or honorarium
  • great work experience for your resume
  • a taste of what "real jobs" are like
