Co-op Apprenticeship Program*

For students: Who have graduated high school in the past five years, interested in the trades, dissatisfied with work opportunities after graduation

This program for local high school graduates offers the opportunity to gain up to four years of apprenticeship training with local employers. Youth are eligible to complete their apprenticeship in any of Alberta’s apprenticeable trades. 

* This program currently operates only in the Fort McMurray/Wood Buffalo and Medicine Hat areas.

First Nations Summer Health Internship

For students: Who are First Nations and live on-reserve, in grades 11 or 12.

This program for First Nations students offers the opportunity to work at their local on-reserve health centre for three weeks in the summer. Students get to see what a career in health services is like, earn money through a paid honorarium, and earn up to nine high school credits.

Fourth Class Powering Engineering Program*

For students: Interested in math and science, enjoy technical or hands-on activities

In this program, students take post-secondary, power engineering theory courses alongside their regular high school classes. During the summer they work in power engineering internships where they earn high school credit and a fair wage while gaining valuable industry experience. After successfully completing the theory and hands-on parts of the program, students are eligible to take the provinicial fourth class power engineering exam to get certified.

Health Care Aide Program* 

For students: Looking to start work right after high school, interested in health care, a “caretaker” personality or interested in pursuing post-secondary education in health care

This program gives students the opportunity to become a fully certified Health Care Aide (HCA) by graduation. Program students complete HCA theory courses alongside their regular high school courses and gain clinical experience during the summer months with paid internships. Students earn high school credit for both theory and practical work, as well as post-secondary credit at participating institutions.

Health Services Youth Initiative 

For students: Interested in any health services career path, the biological sciences or “how things work” in the body 

The Health Services Youth Initiative gives grade 11 students the opportunity to explore one of over 200 health occupations through a summer internship. Students earn an honorarium, school credit and valuable experience in the health services field of their interest. Students may be invited back the following summer at the employer’s discretion.

Oil and Gas Production Field Operator Program* 

For students: Interested in petroleum technology, chemistry, physics, math or earth sciences, enjoys time outdoors 

In this program, students take post-secondary, production field operations theory courses alongside their regular high school classes. During the summer they work in internships as a production field operator, where they earn high school credit and a fair wage while gaining valuable industry experience. After successfully completing the theory and hands-on parts of the program, students are eligible to get certified as a production field operator.

* This program currently operates only in Wabasca and southeastern Alberta. Ask us if this program is available where you live.

Registered Apprenticeship Program

For students: Interested in any of the trades (for a full list, click here), enjoys hands-on work, “lifelong learner” personality

The Registered Apprenticeship Program is an Alberta Education initiative allowing students to begin their apprenticeship training in any of over 50 apprenticeable trades while they’re still in high school. CAREERS works with school RAP coordinators to match suitable student apprentices to available internships, making the link between student and employer. RAP students earn a fair wage, high school credit and hours toward their chosen apprenticeship.
