The program allows to you try out a career in health services, earn 10 high school credits towards your diploma and get paid! Health Services interns work in a  facility such as a hospital or clinic for six weeks during the summer after their grade 11 year.

If you’re a grade 11 student in Alberta who’s willing to take on new challenges, then you’re a great candidate for this program.

To qualify, you must:

  • Be available to work the month of July and the first two weeks of August

You may also be asked to submit your immunization records and a criminal background check for safety reasons.

Applying for the internship is easy. Just complete the following steps.

Step 1: Talk to the Work Experience Coordinator at your high school about participating in the CAREERS Health Services Program.

Step 2: Talk to your parents about the program and encourage them to speak to your Work Experience Coordinator about your participation.

Step 3: Research the areas of health services that interest you.

Step 4: Create a resume, cover letter, and portfolio of your achievements. Fill out the application form, and submit it to your Work Experience Coordinator before the application deadline, usually in late April.

Step 5: A CAREERS team member will assess your suitability for available positions, and match you to an employer based on your preferences. If you are selected, you will be interviewed by personnel from a health facility in your area. Interviews take place in May and June.

Step 6: If you are chosen as a Health Services intern, you will sign a work experience agreement with your employer.

Step 7: Begin your six-week internship in July. Finish up in mid-August.
