CAREERS supports and promotes the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) and has created the Health Services Summer Internship Program, the Production Field Operator Internship, the Forestry Youth Education Initiative and the Skilled Workforce (AHEAD) Career Development Program for students to explore career options.
Each partner -- the student, teacher, parent, employer -- plays a key role a successful student work experience. Although teachers are required to assist in the recruitment and supervision for these programs, the efforts are well worth the positive results.
In participating in any of these programs, educators/school coordinators are responsible to:
- Recommend students who meet the intern profile
- Ensure students are fulfilling their academic requirements for graduation
- Develop the work experience contract with the employer
- Regularly visit the worksite to monitor the student’s progress
- Provide learning outcome template to enable the CAREERS intern to receive course credit and be assigned a course grade
- Monitor students in accordance with the Off-Campus Policy of Alberta Education and policies of the school district
- Be available for consultation or problem solving on student issues
- Provide mentors with a final evaluation form for students to complete
